Back pain is one of the most common afflictions worldwide, affecting millions of adults. Spinal stenosis is one of the most common forms of back pain. Spinal stenosis is caused by a vertebra that shifts backward. In rare cases, forward shifting of the vertebra, known as spondylolisthesis, can narrow the openings of the spinal column.

Either way, when bones are misaligned, they impinge nerves and cause health problems. The cause of spinal stenosis is mechanical stress. In engineering, mechanical stress comes in many forms, such as compressive, tensional and shearing stress. Shearing stress occurs in the spine from excessive bending forward at the waist and repetitive looking down with the neck. The range of motion is called flexion. Flexion is the cause of spinal stenosis.

FIX24 Joint Biomechanics specializes in how to treat and manage spinal stenosis will review the types of spinal stenosis, the symptoms of this condition, and how we can help you manage it.

Types of Spinal Stenosis

Mechanical stress from excessive flexion (bending forward) can produce spinal stenosis in the cervical spine, thoracic spine, and lumbar spine. Flexion causes the vertebra to shift backwards and narrows the opening where the neurological structures reside. This produces nerve impingement and results in pain and/or adverse organ physiology.

There are different types of spinal stenosis depending on exactly where the narrowing and nerve compression occur. Lateral stenosis, also known as foraminal stenosis, involves compression or inflammation of the spinal nerve, while central canal stenosis involves inflammation or compression of the spinal cord itself. Foraminal stenosis often occurs in the lumbar spine. Central canal stenosis is common in the lumbar or cervical spine.

Is Spinal Stenosis A Permanent Disability?

While spinal stenosis can cause mobility limitations and even chronic pain, it is not typically considered a permanent disability. There are many treatment options to help you manage the pain of spinal stenosis, from painkillers and muscle relaxers to spine surgery in more extreme cases.

What are the Symptoms of Spinal Stenosis?

There are many symptoms associated with spinal stenosis. A few common symptoms include back pain, numbness or tingling in the extremities, weakness or inability to maintain grip or balance, burning or aching pain, and pain when standing or walking.

Everyone’s symptoms may present differently. Notably, you might experience one or two of these symptoms, or all of them, if your spinal stenosis is more extreme.

How We Treat Spinal Stenosis

The typical allopathic treatment protocols include injections, painkillers, muscle relaxers, physical therapy, or spine surgery. None of these methods actually address the root problem of the misalignment, which is nerve impingement.

At FIX24 Joint Biomechanics, we take a holistic approach to treating and managing back pain and spine conditions. The FIX24 system involves finding the mechanical stress using diagnostic engineering procedures and developing a plan of action that involves repositioning the vertebra forward without twisting the spine or neck.

Dr. Michael J. Robb then teaches patients how to minimize their daily routines that involve excessive flexion.
